Electric Vehicle (EV) charging continues to gain traction within the electrical installations sector, but why should individuals and companies upskill in this area? Below are 5 reasons why you should consider becoming a qualified EV charge point installer today!

1. OZEV Grants and Incentives

There's no denying that there is money to be made when it comes to electric vehicles and the chargers that come with it. As we move towards a greener future, the government is continuing to offer grants and incentives through the Office of Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV) to support the installation of EV charge points across the country.

Qualified installers can benefit from the grants awarded through to Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme (EVHS) and Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS) which both offer a 75% contribution (capped at £350 inc.VAT) towards the cost of each charge point and its installation. Such grants are currently available to:

  • Homeowners in bungalows, detached, semi-detached or terraced housing (Available until the 31st March)
  • Homeowners who live in flats that have a designated parking area
  • Landlords and social housing providers
  • Eligible businesses, charities and public sector organisations (limited to maximum of 40 EV sockets per application)

Those who are qualified can claim the grant amount back through the scheme and offset the cost to the customer, meaning that contractors who are registered under the OZEV scheme gain an instant and significant competitive advantage over those who aren't.

2. Growing Demand

With the phase out petrol and diesel vehicles over the next decade, sales for electric vehicles are likely to sky rocket, alongside demand for EV charge points. In December 2021 sales of electric vehicles surpassed diesel for the first time, indicating that this consumer shift is already taking place.

It's estimated that around 25 million charge points will need to be installed by 2050 in order to support the EV infrastructure. This will require domestic, industrial and commercial properties to upgrade parking spaces to facilitate electric vehicle charging.

All of these charge points will need to be installed, tested and maintained, creating an entirely new sub-sector within the electrical installations market

3. Best Practice

Electric vehicles and vehicle charging is a relatively new and improving industry meaning that being qualified through a government and industry recognised course is essential in order to ensure that best practices are followed.

Contractors that don't have a workforce skilled in EV charging may struggle to win business compared to those that are fully qualified and can offer safety and piece of mind to consumers.

4. First mover advantage

As the number of qualified EV charge point installers is likely to increase over the next few years, now is the perfect time to upskill.

It's no secret that UK currently has a skills shortage when it comes to EV and EV charging, meaning anyone who is qualified at the moment is likely to benefit from favourable market conditions, where demand is high and competition is fairly low. Undertaking an EV charger installation course will therefore guarantee you have a first mover advantage against other professionals working in the sector.

5.Opportunity

Some of the leading names in EV and the wider energy sector are looking for individuals to join their teams that already have the knowledge, skills and expertise to work with with electric vehicle charging systems.

Here at Universal Skills, we've partnered with some of these big names, all of which have backed our EV charging course with many offering guaranteed job interviews at the end of the course.
